Mobile Learning Journey @ Fort Canning

On October 27th, the GS Preparatory students went on a Mobile Learning Journey to the historic location of Fort Canning.  Aside from exposing our students to more of Singapore’s history, the Mobile Learning Journey aimed to instil our school values of Sharing and Unity in the students as well as pique their curiosity and desire to explore the world around them.

Our younger students were given a few brainteasers to stretch their minds and encourage them to think outside the box.  Older students in the secondary school were equipped with e-readers loaded with applications enabling them to apply their knowledge in the real world.  The students were challenged to co-operate and complete their given tasks as accurately as possible, with a prize being awarded to the best group in each level.

Despite the unexpected inclement weather that day, our students demonstrated perseverance and managed to complete the challenges posed to them.

The winners for the Mobile Learning Journey projects were:

Learning Beyond the Classroom

At Ascensia Academy, students are offered the opportunity to learn outside the boundaries of the classroom.  In August, the Government School Preparatory Course teachers took their students to the library to show them the vast collection of books and knowledge available to them there. Of course, this was hardly restricted to the younger students. Our O-Level Juniors also received the chance to learn outside their classroom with a trip to the National Museum and the National Library in early October.

Outside of the library visits, our students will also get the chance to experience learning on the go with our upcoming Learning Journey to Fort Canning in October. Do keep an eye on this blog for more news on the Fort Canning trip!

Police Talk on Crime Prevention

The Singapore Police Force gave our students an engaging talk on crime prevention on 21st October. The talk covered topics such as staying safe, denying would-be thieves an opportunity to commit crimes, and other important information such as contraband items in Singapore.

Our students found the talk very informative and interesting, and are now certainly more aware of ways to keep themselves from becoming victims of crime.

O Level Graduation

On 17th October, our O-Level Seniors graduated from Ascensia Academy!  Students and staff celebrated the occasion with a sumptuous Peranakan buffet full of tasty food.

Certificates and awards were handed out to the winners, who are as follows:

Top O-Level Student: Tran Kim Thao Nguyen

FOCUS Award – Faith: Teng Siyuan, Huang Yafen

FOCUS Award – Caring: Huang Yafen, Chen Yujing

Ascensia wishes our graduating students the very best for their O-Level examinations, and hopes that they will soar to greater heights in the future!

Ascensia Academy Celebrates Teachers' Day

Our students honoured the hard work their teachers put in with their own class celebrations for their form teachers. Students gave their teachers hand-crafted cards and had small class parties, with some classes going the extra mile to show their appreciation by making their own gifts and even presented personalised videos for their teachers.

Fire Drill

On 15th August, the school conducted an evacuation exercise for staff and students to raise awareness of the proper procedures during an emergency. Ascensia’s students participated wholeheartedly in the fire drill and reacted to the situation well, despite the fact that some of them were taking part in a fire drill for the first time. Well done, students!

The winners of the competitions are as follows:

Cleanest Classroom Competition: Secondary 1A and Primary 2/3

Best Noticeboard Competition: Secondary 2B and Secondary 3B

2014 Semester 1: A Retrospective

Semester 1 has come and gone, but has left in its wake many happy memories for sutdents of Ascensia Academy. We at Ascensia Academy would like to share a retrospective of some of the events that occurred over the semester.

ZERO DEMERIT POINTS AWARD
Ascensia Academy rewarded students who had demonstrated good behaviour throughout the term. At the end of every term, students with zero demerit points were awarded a small goodie bag in recognition of their good behaviour.
Prize winners who had demonstrated exceptional and exemplary behaviour throughout the semester by not receiving any demerit points throughout Terms 1 and 2 were each given a special prize.
Pictured below are our prize winners. Congratulations, award winners, and keep up the good work!

 OUTDOOR LEARNING EXPERIENCE
In Ascensia, learning isn't just limited to the classroom. Students from Ascensia had the chance to experience outdoor learning as part of a holistic education, allowing them to apply skills previously learnt in the classroom. Younger students from the Government School Preparatory Course demonstrated teamwork by putting their heads together and coming up with a plan for their very own Class Fun Day, while our O-Level Seniors got some practice budgeting and preparing for a class barbeque at East Coast Park.

 FOCUS ART CONTEST
At the end of Term 1, the school conducted an art contest for our students to showcase their artistic skills and creativity. The contest centred around our five school Core Values: Faith, Openness, Caring, Unity and Sharing. Many of our students produced amazing artworks and it was a struggle to choose a winner from each class!

CLEANEST CLASS AWARD
Students were encouraged to take responsibility for their own classroom surroundings and environment via the implementation of a Cleanest Class Award conducted over the course of one term. At the end of the term, the class winners were announced and the students in the winning class were each awarded a prize.
This round, the winning classes were the Primary 4 class and the Secondary 1 class!

O-Level Visit to Republic Polytechnic

On 9th January 2014, the O-Level Senior classes and their students left on a trip to the Republic Polytechnic Open House. The trip was intended to expose students to the routes that lay open to them past the O Levels, as well as a glimpse of polytechnic life.

Our students also participated in the interactive exhibits created by the students of Republic Polytechnic. Of particular note was an exhibit in which two of our students bravely stepped up to volunteer to go ‘on air’ as newscasters.

Ascensia’s students also seized the opportunity to interact with staff and students of Republic Polytechnic to find out more about the challenges of their respective courses, doubtlessly taking away with them a better understanding of the demands of polytechnic life.

Ascensia Academy celebrates Chinese New Year!

On the afternoon of the 6th of February, Ascensia kicked off our Chinese New Year celebrations. This year, students were introduced to local Chinese New Year traditions and customs such as the giving of mandarin oranges and the eating of yu sheng.

The festive celebrations served as a cultural exchange point between students of different mutual understanding and acceptance.

Students enthusiastically participated in the activities, munching on such goodies as mandarin oranges and local snacks while eagerly volunteering answers for the day’s Chinese New Year quiz.
